Misc. Notes
Known to have been alive in 1892, and living in Webster, South Dakota. [22]

Probably named after the family doctor, Nathaniel W. Sallade [693, p.725], of Reedsburg, Wisconsin. One of Thomas and Margaret’s sons was known to have been nicknamed “Doc” and so it makes perfect sense that Sallade was the son with that nickname. An alternate theory is that “Sallade” came from Jacob Sallade of Lycoming Co., Pennsylvania. There was a Jacob Sallade of Lycoming Co., PA, born 01-MAR-1788 and died 21-OCT-1853 [51] . Salladasburg, PA, was named after Jacob Sallade. But it is not known if the Allens lived close enough to the Sallades in PA to have actually known them at that time.

Although “Doc” ALLEN was not mentioned in his brother’s will (Charles), he was mentioned in the Petition for Probate of Will, dated 31-OCT-1927 (“Doc Allen, over the age of 21 years, Elko, Nevada”). So somebody believed he was still alive at that time. It appears that Doc ALLEN was never found by the court. Based on census records and his death certificate, he change his name to Sam/Samuel, so that may have hindered any attempt to locate him. [3747]

Doc ALLEN may have moved to Elko, Nevada [3747], and worked as a miner, and may have married a nurse but the marriage only lasted a year or two. [169]. However, the presumed death certificate lists him as single. [4932]

23-OCT-2014: Nevada Department of Health and Human Services, reports they could not find any death record for a “Sam ALLEN” over the period 01-JAN-1911 to 23-OCT-2014. Not sure why they couldn’t find it, as it is now (15-MAY-2016) found in the Ancestry.com database “Nevada, Death Records, 1911-1965.” [4932]
Research
There was a Sam ALLEN, age 48, born in Wisconsin, with both parents born in Pennsylvania, in Beaowawe, Eureka Co., NV, 26-JAN-1920, as a boarder, in the 1920 census [567]. He was working as a cook at a hotel. It all matches except for the first name, but maybe he didn’t like the name Sallade. No similar entry has been found in the 1930 census of Nevada.
The 1900 census has an entry that appears to be the same Sam ALLEN, in Helena, MT. [569]

A less certain reference to a “Samuel ALLEN” born circa 1873, Wisconsin, appears in the 1910 census of Green River, Sweetwater Co., Wyoming. The main discrepancy is that it lists his father’s place of birth as Wisconsin. But his mother was born in Pennsylvania. Samuel was a railroad laborer.

I searched for ‘ALLEN’ on the Eureka Co. recorder’s web site for deaths between 01-JAN-1920 & 01-JAN-1941 and did not find Sam or anything close. Elko Co. does not have an online index and it appears they have no death records after 1910. Statewide records start in 1911.
