Author of a book of poems, “Original Miscellaneous Poems, On Moral, Religious, and Entertaining Subjects,” 1818, including such titles as “The Hobby-horse,” “Against Suicide,” “Sonnet on the Prospect of the Abolition of the Slave Trade,” “An Elegy to the Memory of Ambrose Isted, Esq.” and “A Tribute to the Memory of William Cowper, Esq.” [122] Also published “English Grammar Epitomised”, 1788, and one other book, “Instructions for Youth at Sunday Schools.” [123] I have photocopies of the poetry and grammar books, obtained from the British Library.

Quoting from a footnote in Source [857]:
“He was destined to become one of the “Worthies” of this village—
schoolmaster, land surveyor, and poet. An interesting advertisement of his,
headed “Moulton School," will be found in the Mercury of July 4th, 1795.
Two of his publications are at the British Museum, one of them with the
following title :—English Grammar | epitomized : | or, a Short, Plain, Easy |
Compendium of English Grammar. | For the Use of | Youth at Schools, | as well
as all those Adult Persons
, | who have hitherto neglected the most useful | of all
Studies
, | that of their Mother-Tongue. | Wherein the Definitions are short, the
Examples intelligible, | the Rules of Syntax are exemplified with Examples
under | each Rule; Punctuation, or the Use of Stops, with other | Marks used
in Grammar, are illustrated by Examples; Rules
| for properly placing of
Capital Letters in writing; Rules for
| Reading with Propriety; a Sentence
construed according to
| the Elements of the English Language; with some Hints
and
| Observations respecting the teaching of Youth to read, with | Ease, Profit,
and Improvement;—addressed to the Teachers
| of Youth. | By WILLIAM CHOWN,
Schoolmaster, | at Moulton, near Northampton. | Northampton: Printed by T.
Dicey and Co
. No date appears on the title page, but page iii. (“An address
to the Teachers of Youth of both sexes”) is signed “Wm Chown, Moulton,
February 16th, 1788." The existence of this little book (22 pages, 12 mo) had
been forgotten until the Museum acquired a copy on April 27th, 1866. Its
present press-mark is “ 12982.AA.50.” In 1818, he published a widely-known
work entitled “Original | Miscellaneous | Poems, | On Moral, Religious, and
Entertaining
| Subjects. | Northampton: | Printed by F. Cordeaux.” (Crown 8vo,
98 pages, and 63 poems; the Subscribers’ List containing the names of 43
Moulton residents, and 202 others).”
