Misc. Notes
Retired in 1916 after 49 years of service with the railroad. Wife was alive at time of his retirement. The news clipping states that James was a native of Glenfarg. Handwriting on the original article says “Dad’s stepfather” but I don’t know whose handwriting that is. A different handwriting gives a date of 8-Feb-1916. If this is the date of publication then the retirement ceremony would have been on 1-Feb-1916 (the 8th was a Tuesday and another article on the same page mentions an event on Wednesday, so the Tuesday of the celebration must have been the week before. But if the 8th was the date of the celebration then the date of publication could have been anytime from 10-Feb to 15-Feb-1916) [83]

First clue that James was related to the Winton family was on the chart drawn by Dorothy Blair, though the exact relationship has proven to be a little different from what she believed. [795]

He was listed as “visiting” the family of Hugh Wanton[sic] as of 30-Mar-1851 (the census day). [777] In 1861 he was upgraded from visitor to boarder. [914]

At the time of his marriage to Jessie Brown, his residence was on Sunnybank Place in South Leith. [800]
