Misc. Notes
Unusual note in 1879-87 clerical survey, describing Johan as “declared dead” (translation of the rest of the note pending). [2890]

After leaving Mjällby on 6 May 1881, Johan travelled to the Swedish port of Malmö, where he boarded an unknown ship on 12 May 1881, reporting his destination as Chicago, Illinois. He probably sailed first to the east coast of England, crossed over to Liverpool and sailed from there to New York. [2899] There are two passenger lists naming a Johan NILSSON from Sweden, arriving in New York from Liverpool, on 28-MAY-1881 (S.S. Adriatic) and 2-JUN-1881 (S.S. Marathon). The latter may be more likely, as his reported age (19) is closer to actual (18) than the former. But other than that I cannot really say with certainty which of those ships he arrived on.
Research
Have not been able to confirm that this “John HAMMER” is the same one mentioned in Source [2106]. But if so, he was a cheesemaker.
