In November of 1909, Edith, who was not quite 15, eloped from Hillsgrove, Sullivan Co., PA, to Bulkhead, Chemung Co., NY (now a part of Southport, Chemung Co., NY, which is adjacent to the larger town of Elmira), with Judson LEONARD, where she claimed to have married Judson. Reportedly, Judson’s parents lived near Bulkhead. Her father, Austin, and her brother (presumably, William A.), traveled to Elmira, in search of Edith. Police eventually located the young couple near Bulkhead. At the time of the news article (22 Dec 1909), an investigation was underway into who performed the marriage. [4780] The 1900 census of Wells, Bradford Co., PA, shows a Judson LEONARD, born Dec 1891, whose parentes, Judson Sr. and Mary, were born in New York. A 1905 New York State Census, shows this same LEONARD family living in Southport, NY, with Judson Jr., listed as “Jud”. In this case, his year of birth works out to 1893.
