Find A Grave Memorial# 93984330 claims this John is the one who served in the Civil War in Company B, 39th Illinois Infantry. But it also claims he was born in Pennsylvania to parents Morris & Margaret Bowes. Have not seen any evidence that our John was ever in Illinois. His appearance in the 1900 census of Colusa shows a man who was born in New York and whose parents were born in England [5030], which is consistent with the 1850 census. The memorial author might have confused two John Bowes. Possibly confused with the son of Means & Margaret Bowes, who lived in Boggs, Centre Co., PA, in 1850. That son John was born ca. 1833 in PA. That is a very similar story to the one in the memorial. Contrary to what it says on the memorial for “Manes” Bowes (# 57757757), that gravestone is for an infant, though certainly could be a related infant. A death certificate dated 14 Aug 1912 for an Andrew C. BOWES,a ge 67, who died in Centre Co., says his parents were Manes Bowes and Margaret Sheets (same as what it says on John’s memorial except for “Morris” vs. “Manes”. It also says that Manes & Margaret were born in Centre Co., PA., so that doesn’t match John’s parents being born in England. Andrew appears in the 1850 census. “Manes” is probably “Manze Bowes” in 1880 in Liberty, Centre, Pennsylvania. Manes’ son John, could be the John Bowes in Walton, Eaton, Michigan, in 1880, married to Emily. That John’s parents were born in PA and John was born in PA ca. 1833.

A John C. Bowes registered for the Civil War draft in 1863, with residence in Liberty, Centre Co., PA. Age 30. Four other men from there named Bowes also registered at the same time.

Pension card found at Fold3.com. Have not yet been able to find John in the census from 1860-1890.

Fold3 has a pension index card showing such a John BOWES with both Invalid an Widow claims filed (widow appl. # 8672750, cert. # 651380). An alternate version of the card is on Familysearch:

The invalid claim was filed in 1864.

The 39th Illinois Infantry was nicknamed “Yates’ Phalanx.” John must have been in Bloomington, McLean Co. IL, if he was in Company B.

A widows pension payment card found for Martha A Bowes, Certificate No. 651380, for soldier John Bowes, Co. B, 39th Illinois Inf. This appears to match the couple who lived in Colusa. Payments started in 1908; looks like Martha died 19 Dec 1922.

Ancestry’s California Death Index lists a Martha A Bowes who died 19 Dec 1922, in Colusa, age 78.
The 1850 census lists a Martha A Hearn, age 6, born in KY, living in Mount Pleasant, Scotland, Missouri, USA. Parents were James & Sarah Hearn, both born in KY. In 1860 the same family is in Santa Rosa, Sonoma, California. Her youngest sibling is named Everette, same as her future son. By 1870 the family had moved to Grand Island, Colusa, California. In 1910 Martha A Bowes was living in Colusa with her son, Everett. Memorial# 19192517 appears to be for her mother, Sarah J Hearn.

John Bowes appears in voter registration lists, 06 May 1867, 30 Mar 1882, 12 Aug 1890, 28 Sep 1892, 23 Jul 1896, in Colusa, California, and is reported as born in New York. His age in each case suggests birth in 1834.
