During John’s residence in Lansing, Michigan, he operated a dry goods business called “Thomas and Co.” along with Edwin Randolph MERRIFIELD and Augustus F. WELLER, his sons-in-law. It was reportedly the first dry goods store in Lansing. The biographical sketch of John in this source claims he died at Hudson House, in Lansing, Michigan, making no reference to his move back to Farmington. [5406, page 341, 506]

While living in Farmington, he was elected to one term in the Eleventh Legislature of Michigan, representing the Oakland District, on 03-NOV-1845 and was sworn into office on 05-JAN-1846. [5456]
