Research
In the 1841 census of Crieff, living next door to James & Catherine WINTON, on Miller Street, was an Ann GOW, age 40-44, a washerwoman, living with 5 children but no husband. [6220] The same Ann and children appear in the 1851 census in Crieff but with an address of “Water Wynd.” Based on the marriage records of the Thomas GOW listed as the washerwoman’s youngest child, it looks like that Ann GOW was actually Ann GARVIE, who married Daniel GOW, 19-OCT-1821 in Perth (parish 387 - see ScotlandsPeople). Daniel could be related to James GOW, but that has not been researched.
Strangely, the only birth record of a Thomas GOW whose mother was Anne [sic] GARVIE states the father’s name as Donald, but there’s no record of a Donald GOW marrying a GARVIE. There’s also the problem that the Thomas in the census is 12-13 years younger than the Thomas in that birth record. His older sister, Isabel has a record of birth to a Donald GOW & Ann GARVIE, 1822 in Crieff (a closer match to census). So somehow it seems that Donald=Daniel. Have not found birth records for Thomas’ siblings Archibald, Alexander or Peter. If the father died as Donald rather than Daniel, then he may have died at age 42 in Longforgan, Perthshire, 17-MAY-1838, which would account for his absence in the 1841 census. Thomas GOW married Helen McLaren, 14-JUN-1861, Dunblane, Perthshire (United Presbyterian). Dunblane is now in Stirling Council Area.

Since James GOW was living without a spouse in 1851, Ann McGREGOR GOW must also have died before then. So the Ann GOW who died 1874, age 77, Crieff, Perthshire, was probably the former Ann GARVIE.
