Misc. Notes
Although it is believed that she died in Victoria, no records of this have been found (searched sources 882
[882] & 993
[993]). It is known that she was with the family on their return trip from England in June of 1893 (and that sister Gertrude was born, 1888, in Victoria), but probably died within the first 18 months after that.
[2186]The photo of Nellie with her mother and William Parnell Smith, suggests that the age difference between Willie & Nellie is at least to 5-6 years, though the currently established dates make it out to be about nine years apart. Joan Goold believes the photo was taken in Montreal, QC, in 1885 and that Nellie died before the family moved to Victoria, BC.
Possible proper names: Eleanor; Helen.
Based on the 1891 census of Victoria, BC, she was also known as Mary.

Unable to find any record of death at BC Archives. It seems hard to believe but I found only one death record of anyone with the SMITH surname who died in the period 01-JAN-1893 to 01-MAY-1901, in the entire province.
[882]Also not found in the Victoria Death Notices Index, but that index only starts in 1901.
[5811]Ross Bay Cemetery Records has a burial listed for a Mary Ellen SMITH, died 16-MAR-1894, age 8yr. 8mo., in Victoria, but also states she was born in Victoria. But it is conceivable that “Nelly” was derived from “Ellen” if that really was her name. Checked 1893-1901.
