When Dudley’s mother went to America, he was initially left in the care of his grandmother, Alice Moore (nee Johnson), until his mother asked for him to be returned. After she married Francis LOOP, she went back to England in 1919, to arrange for Dudley’s passage back to the United States. Three months later, Olive and Dudley sailed on the RMS Mauretania (Cunard Line), with passage paid for by his new stepfather. According to the passenger manifest, at the time of departure from Southampton, he had been living with “Mrs. McCrudy” (no doubt a misspelling of “Macready”) at 176 Chichester Rd., Portsmouth, England. That would have been his maternal grandmother. Another mistake on the passenger list is that it states his final destination as “Canajohani, New Jersey” but the name of the town is actually “Canajoharie” and is in New York. His stepfather’s street address was given as 25 Mohawk St. However, at the time his mother applied for her passport, she was living in Wichita Falls, Texas.
