Edwin first visited Canada when he departed from Liverpool, England, on board the S.S. Tunisian, arriving 20-JUN-1903 at Montreal, Quebec, Canada. [2176] The passenger list gave his occupation as salesman and his intended destination as Calgary, Alberta. Based on a journal he kept (as reported to me by his grandson), Edwin returned to England in 1904, though the passenger list for that trip has yet to be found.

In November of 1905, Edwin crossed the border from Canada to the U.S., at Blaine, Whatcom Co., Washington. The record says he had $180 on him at the time. And was apparently planning to continue on to San Francisco, California. [3317]

In April 1911 (date of the census), Edwin and his wife were visiting her brother, Thomas Lord COTTON, in Lancashire, England. Their return trip was in June of that year, aboard the RMS Victorian, which arrived in Quebec on 16 Jun 1911. The passenger list shows that a 3 year old girl, “Dolly SMITH” was traveling with them. This apparently was their daughter, Dorothy, who had been born in England, in 1907. [3308], [3330]

At some later date he travelled to Nelson, British Columbia, staying with his Smith cousins there, then continued on to Vancouver, later heading back eastward to Quebec. [2176], [2146]

In 1919, Edwin & his wife, along with their children, Dorothy, Vincent and Thomas, travelled to England, aboard the S.S. Melita, arriving in Liverpool, 24-MAY-1919, and planning to visit family at 19 All Saints Road, St. Anne on Sea, Lancashire. Based on a detail from his 1922 voyage, it appears he may have remained in England this time until August, 1919. [3312]

On 14-JUL-1922, Edwin and his son, Thomas, departed from Montreal, Quebec, sailing to England aboard the S.S. Montrose. It arrived in Liverpool on 21-JUL-1922. He began his return voyage from Liverpool, on 18-AUG-1922, aboard the S.S. Montclare. Arrival date back in Quebec not reported. [3313], [3318]

On 2-OCT-1925, Edwin arrived in Liverpool aboard the S.S. Montclare, again with the destination of St. Anne on Sea, Lancashire. He then departed from Liverpool on 23-OCT-1925, arriving at Quebec on 30-OCT-1925 on the S.S. Montrose. [3335], [3336]

In 1928, Edwin travelled alone, from St., John, New Brunswick, Canada, to Liverpool, England, aboard the S. S. Minnesdosa, arriving in Liverpool, 04-FEB-1928. His reported destination in the UK was 19 All Saints Rd., St. Annes on Sea. He returned from visiting his mother, departing from Liverpool, aboard the S.S. Montcalm, on 02-MAR-1928, arriving at St., John, New Brunswick, Canada, 11-MAR-1928. [3311], [3333]

Edwin & Mary travelled again to England in 1929, indicated by their return to Quebec, on the S.S. Duchess of Bedford, 25-JUL-1929, having departed from Liverpool, England, 19-JUL-1929. [3310]

In 1934, Edwin & Mary travelled to England from New York aboard the S.S. Bremen, arriving at Southampton, 27-APR-1934. [3315] They returned to Canada, departing from Liverpool on 25-MAY-1934, aboard the S.S. Duchess of Atholl, arriving in Quebec, 2-JUN-1934. This passenger list states that prior to this arrival in Canada, Edwin & Mary had resided in Canada from May, 1910 to April, 1934. [3332]

On 7-MAR-1936, Edwin & Mary traveled aboard the S.S. Pennsylvania, from New York to San Francisco, California, arriving there on 23-MAR-1936, and with the intention of staying at the Hotel St. Francis. They planned to remain in the United States for two weeks. [3309]

On 10-MAR-1937, Edwin & Mary and Edwin’s sister, Matilda SMITH, returned from a West Indies cruise aboard the M.V. Britannica. [3316]

On 22-OCT-1937, Edwin crossed the border from Mexico at Laredo, Texas, United States. It is difficult to decipher the immigration card but it appears that he intended to return from there to Canada via Detroit, Michigan. Unknown as to when he entered Mexico or why. [3314]

On 07-JAN-1954, Edwin & Mary flew from Vancouver, British Columbia, to Honolulu, Hawaii, on Canadian Pacific Air Lines flight 301-7. [3334] Admittedly this could have been a different Edwin & Mary Smith, as the airline records do not describe the passengers in as much detail as the ship records.

I attempted to locate Edwin in the 1901 census of England. The
first entry I found was for an Edwin G. Smith age 17 in
Warwickshire, but it was not the right person because his place of
birth was not correct and he had completely different parents. But
the 2nd entry is more promising, though not without some
uncertainty. It shows an Edwin Smith age 18, born in Northampton,
living as a boarder in the home of William Turvey, in the civil
parish of Balsall Heath. The registration district was called
"Kings Norton" and due to various border changes, it is somewhat
unclear as to whether this was in Worcestershire or Warwickshire at
the time of the census. This Edwin's occupation was listed
as "Wholesale Fish Salesman."
