Research
Not in his parent’s home in 1880 [1048]. Only two Joseph SMITHs found in 1880 come close to being the right person but both have factors that would seem to rule them out. First, there was a Joseph SMITH, of the correct age and birthplace, living in Hersey, Springfield Twp., St. Croix Co., WI, working in a saw mill and living as border in the Henry PETERS household, but his parents were born in France (you have to view the census image on Ancestry.com to confirm this because the image on HeritageQuest is completely unreadable in the birthplace fields). Film T9-1445, Pages 266C+D. The second case is a “Jos. E. SMITH” age 27, boarding in a hotel in La Crosse, WI, but reporting his place of birth (and that of his parents) as NY. [907]

Misc. Notes
Her father was born in Pennsylvania. Mother was born in Michigan. [1039], [1038]
Flora may be a first cousin of Margaret E. TAYLOR (wife of Thomas ALLEN). [1046] Although Source [1046] suggested the cousin was Joseph Smith, the discovery that Flora’s maiden name was TAYLOR and that her father was born in Pennsylvania, shows that it is more likely she is the blood relative. However, unless Dennis changed his name, he does not appear to be the brother of Margaret that I originally thought he was. Margaret’s brother, Mahlon D. Taylor, is missing from the Pennsylvania records after 1850, so it is still an open question.
