First, there was a Joseph SMITH, of the correct age and birthplace, living in Hersey, Springfield Twp., St. Croix Co., WI, working in a saw mill and living as border in the Henry PETERS household, but his parents were born in France (you have to view the census image on Ancestry.com to confirm this because the image on HeritageQuest is completely unreadable in the birthplace fields).
