Misc. Notes
In 1920, Jane traveled with her mother and half-brother (Earl) to England, returning in 1921. See Notes for Ethel BAKER for additional details.
[3585], [3586]Although the 1921 Canadian Census appears to say that “Jean MARKS” is the daughter of “H J MARKS”,
[3584] other evidence suggests that she was actually Ethel’s daughter from her previous marriage to Mr. DAVIS. The reasoning is that when Ethel traveled to England in 1920, presumably to visit her parents, she took Jane and Earl with her, but not John and Harold. This would make sense if the folks in England were Jane’s grandparents, since they would not be related to John and Harold. The relationships in that census are a bit confused, in that it claims John was Henry’s stepson, when in fact he was only the stepson of Ethel, and by the line of reasoning here, Jean/Jane should have been reported as Henry’s stepdaughter. Maybe the enumerator got confused as to which child was the stepchild. Unfortunately we may have to wait until 2023 or later before Jane’s birth record is open to the public.
