At the time of son Edwin’s death, it was reported that his parents’ “residence” was Connecticut, but given that John and “Rebecca” had almost certainly died before Edwin, this must be taken as just their last known residence. [5385] On the other hand, Connecticut is a bit suspect if his parents were really John and Rachel MERRIFIELD.

One of the letters written in support of his son Edwin’s application to West Point, refered to John as “Capt. John Merifield” and also stated that John was “fully acquainted with President Van Buren.” This same letter specifically links John to his former residence in Catskill, Greene Co., New York. [5390]
