Misc. Notes
It appears that James went to Australia circa 1868. [4313] Given that he was from Perthshire and Mary Ann was from Kent, it would be reasonable to guess that he met her for the first time in Australia. And given Mary’s immigration date, the marriage was very soon after her arrival. Sometime between 21 Apr 1874 and 3 Apr 1881, their daughter, Catherine, returned to the UK and moved in with her uncle, William C. PALMER. Since James died when Catherine was barely 2 months old, this return to England may have been closer to 1874 than to 1881. At present, it is not known if James’ wife returned to England with her daughter or stayed in Australia, though it seems unlikely the child would have travelled alone.

The informant for James’ death was his cousin, James CAMERON, who also lived in Gran Hills, where James died. Mr. CAMERON was also apparently the undertaker. [4313] For James CAMERON to be James STEWART’s 1st cousin would imply that his father was a brother of Catherine CAMERON, though at present none of Catherine’s siblings have been identified.
Research
1861: Possibly a servant ploughman in the household of Alexander & Ann GILRUTH, at Auchter Alyth, Alyth, Perthshire. Or, possibly serving in the same position in the household of William and Elizabeth SCHRAND, at Annet, Kinlock Rannoch, Perthshire.

Misc. Notes
On 21 May 1870, Mary boarded the S.S. Hampshire, at Gravesend, Kent, England, bound for Melbourne, Australia. The captain’s forecast was for a 140-day voyage; in fact it lasted 89 days. Mary was a steerage passenger.
Research
There are two records of a Mary Ann PALMER, born in Malling registration district (Kent), in 1844. One birth was registered in the March 1844 quarter and the other was registered in the June 1844 quarter. [462]

Possible death record: BMD Deaths Mar Qtr. 1892,
STEWART, Mary Ann, age 48, Lewisham registration district,Vol. 1d, page 998. [462] However, see next note.

Possible grave site reference: Find A Grave Memorial# 142220188. This source gives the date of death as 25-MAR-1892, which is consistent with the BMD index. However, there was also a Mary Ann STEWART of Forest Hill, Kent, who died on that date, who was the wife of a Thomas STEWART (The National Probate Calendar for 1892).
So for now, it appears the BMD entry and the grave memorial are probably for a different Mary from ours.
