According to the 1880 census, John was a farm hand for the Hugh Blakely family [1509], also in Roseville Twp., MN, so he wasn’t far from home. At this time, his parents were in England. [460]
In 1900, John & Clara lived next door to his mother and brother (Joseph). [561], [1508] In 1930, they lived next door to their daughter, Myrtle. [3234]
John F. Flanders of Paynesville, Stearns Co., MN ( [563]), did not live far from John S., and both had parents born in England, but the relationship is unknown. It is curious that John F. Flanders had a daughter named Lydia J. Flanders, b. circa 1895. John F. was born circa 1864, in Minnesota.
Orline Lydia Flanders (Vera’s mother) mentioned an “Uncle John” in her postcard [458] to Eva Bates, so she must have been referring to John Smith Flanders.
