Misc. Notes
William and Rachel sold their farm in Amwell, 11-JUN-1777, to David CUMMING, Jr. [1868, p.18], [1818, p.187], [4377], [4526] and moved to Kingwood Township.

A memorial exists for William on Findagrave (# 113639725) [1498] but it is not based on an actual discovery of his grave.

Date of death is an estimate based on the date of his will, 25 Nov 1799, and the date the estate inventory was written, 9 Jan 1800.
Military
William may have been a private under Captain David PLUNKET and Colonel Stephen MOYLAN in the 4th Regiment, Continental Light Dragoons. [1868, p.18] However, due to his age, perhaps it was really his son, William, who served?

A muster roll, dated 23-SEP-1778, of Captain David PLUNKET's troops, lists a William HOOGLAND of New Jersey, present, having enlisted 19-APR-1778. But this record alone doesn't clarify which William HOOGLAND this is. [3523] (Note: this muster roll was compiled after the unit had left Valley Forge). Another list on Fold3.com, apparently a casualty list, spells his name “HOGLAND” but gives the same enlistment date. If this represents the soldier’s death, then clearly this is not the right William HOOGLAND, further suggesting it was his son, whose death date is otherwise uncertain. [3524]
Research
Marriage not listed in Source [1926].

In the period 1778-1780, tax lists mention a William HOGELAND and William HOGELAND Jr., living in Amwell Twp. Hunterdon Co., NJ. [4360, p.102] Also listed as being in Amwell at that time was Daniel, Derrick, Henry and Joseph HOGELAND. In Kingwood Twp. there was an Amos HOGELAND/HOUGALAND. Earlier tax records for 1773-1774 have no reference to anyone named HOGELAND or similar.

The entire 1790 census for New Jersey was lost, and William died before the 1800 census (which, for New Jersey, was also lost).

Research
Some people claim that Rachel’s maiden name was HEARING or HARING OR HARINGH, but I have not seen any good evidence for that. One tree goes so far as to say that Rachel’s father was Jan Cosyn HARING/HARINGH (1693-1771) who died in Rockland Co., NY, and married 15 Jan 1718 in Clarkstown of that county. This Jan HARING appears to be the same person as in Findagrave MEMORIAL# 127546289. He may have been the son of Cosyn/Cozyn/Couzin/Cosine/Cozine Jansen HARING/HEARING/HARINGH/HERRING. Findagrave links Jan (John) HARING to a daughter named Rachel, but says she married Tunis SMITH. This would appear to eliminate her as being the wife of William HOOGLAND, unless she had more than one husband.
