Research
There was another William GARDNER, in BMD Births, Northampton reg. dist., Dec Qtr. 1854: Vol.3b, p.68; that is probably the William GARDNER baptized 10 Dec 1854, Bugbrooke, son of John (labourer) & Ann GARDNER. That baptism appears on the very next register page (11) after the baptism entry for William Smith GARDNER (Source [7187]). That Ann may have been Ann ASHBY (married 18 Dec 1834) Bugbrooke. Is this the same ASHBY family as the John ASHBY who married Sarah Ann Smith GARDNER? Ann ASHBY may be the one baptized 16 Apr 1815, Bugbrooke to John & Mary ASHBY. In which case, Ann would have been about 39 at the birth of her son William GARDNER. But it appears she continued to have children as late as age 45 (though that child only lived 10 months).
So who did William son of John GARDNER marry? Possibly, in a 2nd marriage to a Margaret WILSON in 1891. Can probably rule out all marriages before 1872 based on age.

Searching BMD for marriages registered Mar Qtr. 1875 through Dec Qtr. 1881, found 8 marriages for a William GARDNER, only one of which was for a William Smith GARDNER:
Dec. Qtr. 1880, Northampton district Vol.3b, p.119, bride’s name: Eliza Harriet A. ADAMS.

William appears to have been recorded twice in the 1881 census of Bugbrooke.
S[2447] @ Camp Hill, William GARDNER, age 26, an agricultural labourer, living with parents Joseph & Anne; married, b.Bugbrooke; census incorrectly makes it appear that sister Sarah A. is his wife, but she was actually married to John ASHBY. Joseph’s granddaughter, Harriet A. ASHBY was incorrectly listed as Harriet A. GARDNER.

S[7184] @ Kiln Yard, William S. GARDENER age 26, married, Ironstone Labourer, b. Bugbrooke; wife Eliza H. A., son, Ernest J. <2mo. old. (marriage to Eliza was 11 Oct 1880; census was 3 Apr 1881)

In 1891 he is William S. GARDINER & Eliza H.A. and son Ernest + 5 more children

one of the Williams was a servant in 1871 in Bugbrooke;
Another William was son of John (a lawyer) & Ann, with older brother John (a shoe maker); this William was a railway labourer and not married

Misc. Notes
In the 1911 census, it was inexplicably reported that Eliza (“Lize H. A.”) had only one child born alive in this marriage and that one was still living. It also claimed the marriage had lasted only 26 years to that point (implying marriage ca. 1885) and that she had been born in Silverstone, Buckinghamshire, rather than in Bugbrooke. But Silverstone is a parish in Northamptonshire. Silverstone, Northamptonshire was reported as her birthplace in the 1901 census. [7192] [7193]
Research
There was a Harriet Louisa ADAMS bapt. 28-OCT-1857, Silverstone, but father was Henry ADAMS.
