Misc. Notes
“GARDINER” is the spelling on his 1854 marriage certificate.
Joseph was a widower at the time he married Ann. [2399]
He had a nephew, “John Pew” age 21, in 1861 census. [2446]
Research
In 1881 & 1891, his neighbor was Elijah GARDNER (1891: GARDINER), wife Harriett + children (in 1891) (household #114 same page in 1881; household #113 on previous page in 1891). Possibly related.

Another neighbor (household #120) in 1881, Elizabeth GARDNER could be the widow of Paul GARDNER.

Another Joseph GARDNER in Adstone, Northamptonshire, in 1851, and a third living with Mary POOL, his grandmother.

The only Joseph found in 1841, is the one living with his grandmother, Mary POOLE (POOL in 1851). But that Joseph is not married as of 1851.

Research
In 1851 it appears possible that Joseph & Sophia were recorded in two different households. In one case, in Bugbrooke [2444] where Joseph is the head of household. In the 2nd, in Adstone, Northamptonshire, Joseph, Sophia (spelled “Sopha”) and their son, Charles, are living with Ann TALBUT, 57 (widow). In this case, Joseph is described as Ann’s son-in-law (but he might have been her nephew). In the Adstone schedule, Joseph is two years younger than in the Bugbrooke scheudle; Sophia is one year older, but Charles is consistently age 1. In both cases Charles was born in Bugbrooke. But “Sopha” in Adstone was born in Preston Capes (Daventry district), Northamptonshire, instead of Maidford.

[2399]Ann was classified a “minor” at the time of her marriage.
Witnesses were Thomas SMITH and Mary Smith ELFRED.

1911 census states that Ann was the mother of 8 children, 3 living and 5 deceased. [7169]
Research
The marriage of Ann & Joseph was witnessed by Thomas SMITH and Mary Smith ELFRED. [2399]

In Harbury on 11-MAY-1846, “Ann ELFRED” (a widow) married Thomas MALLIS/MULLIS (a widower); her father was Thomas SMITH, a labourer. In 1851 census, Thomas and Ann MALLIS/MULLIS were living in Harbury, next door to a Richard and Ann SMITH (siblings, not a married couple, both born in Harbury). Ann MULLIS reported her birthplace as Kislingbury, Northamptonshire, born ca.1810. This makes her the right age to be the sister of William SMITH, husband of Catharine CROSS. But if true, that tends to make it look like William really was born in Kislingbury as the census records keep saying.

1861 census Ann & Thomas MULLIS, still in Harbury. A Mary S. ELFORD, 27, born in Leamington, Warwickshire, circa 1834, is reported as the Daughter-in-law. There is also a Grandson, William T. ELFRED, 4, born ca.1857 in Harbury. But Mary is listed as unmarried. They were still living next door to Richard and Ann SMITH. A William T. ELFRED b. ca. 1856 (probably Sep.Qtr., Southam district), died in 1930 in Croyden reg. district. Mary must be Ann’s daughter from the ALFRED/ELFRED marriage.

1841 census, Harbury: Anne ALFRED, 30-34, a Bonnett Maker, *not* born in Warwickshire, apparent head of household. Daughter Mary ELFRED, 7 (1834), born in Warwickshire; an older couple, Thomas SMITH, 65-69, *not* born in Warwickshire, and apparent wife, Mary, 50-54, *not* born in Warwickshire.
Note: “Leamington” or “Leamington Priors” is now “Royal Leamington Spa” (Warwickshire).

A William ALFRED married Ann SMITH at Leamington Priors, Warwickshire, 1831 (final Banns was 08-MAY-1831). Although it was written as “both of this parish” that part appears to have been crossed out and a new notation addded which I can’t make out. There is also a notation after Ann’s name that is not clear. “England, Select Marriages” claims the marriage date was 24-APR-1831.

A Mary Smith ELFRED b. ca. 1834, died 1895 (Jun. Qtr) Southam district (Warwickshire).
