Misc. Notes
John was on board the Royal Navy destroyer, HMS Cobra, which departed Newcastle upon Tyne, on 17 Sep 1901, bound for Portsmouth, Hampshire. According to a newspaper report, John was a leading stoker, 2nd class. While passing near the Outer Dowsing Shoal, in the North Sea, the ship struck something, split in two and sank in severe weather on 18 Sep 1901. It was reported that 67 men were lost, with only 12 survivors. [6420] While John’s service record does mention that he drowned while on board the Cobra, it doesn’t mention the Cobra in the list of ships to which he had been assigned during his term of service. This is probably because the Royal Navy had not yet officially taken posession of this relatively new ship. That was to take place at the end of this voyage, in Portsmouth.
