In 1865, William was living next door (though probably in the rural sense) to Albert W. FLANDERS, who would later marry William's sister-in-law, Laura C. HANSON. [3224], [3225]

In 1910 they reported to the census taker that they had been married for 22 years, when in fact it had only been 19 years, 5 months. Since their daughter, Eva, was 22, either they deliberately misstated the years to match the age of Eva (who was born out of wedlock), or the census taker made an assumption based on Eva's age. In 1900 they gave the correct number of years married. Of course it did help that in 1900 the enumerator was Will R. BATES! [298], [37]
