Misc. Notes
Was living with his sister Eva in Casper, Wyoming, 1930. [522]

Passenger ship records show that from 1930 to 1946 Maurice made seven trips to Aruba on ships owned by ESSO or Standard Oil (twice with Martha and one of those also included her son, Gerald Sumption) and one on the cruise ship, SS Santa Paula, to Curaçao, in 1941, also with Martha & Gerald. Technically, the records only identify the ships on which he returned to the USA. [1399], [1400]

When Maurice traveled to Aruba in 1939 with Martha and Gerald, the home address they gave was 3996 Gamma Street, San Diego, CA, which, in the 1940 census, is where his mother, Dena BATES, was living. [2840] Their reported address during the 1941 cruise, was 2215 S. Cloverdale Ave., Los Angeles, CA. [2843] In the 1940 census, that house was occupied by Donald & Lillian BAIRD, from which it has been deduced that Lillian was actually Martha’s older sister. [2845]

10 Dec 1930 from Aruba, S.S. Cerro Ebano [2848]
10 May 1933 from Aruba, S.S. R. G. Stewart [2849]

13 Oct 1937 from Aruba, S.S. Esso Aruba [2852]
23 Apr 1939 from Aruba (w/Martha & Gerald), S.S. Esso Bolivar [1400]
25 Jun 1941 from Curaçao (w/Martha & Gerald), S.S. Santa Paula [2843]
02 May 1946 from Aruba (w/Martha), S.S. Esso Bolivar [2851]

The 1946 passenger list appears to suggest that Maurice departed for Aruba in July, 1944 and Martha on 27-OCT-1945.

Research
Residence of Maurice BATES in 1940 still undetermined, though he may have been living “part time” with his wife’s sister (Lillian) and husband. He may have been in Aruba at the time of the census.
