The will of Samuel GREEN
[3496, p.149] places in question the validity of this John being the son of John HOOGLAND, given that the will names Jonathan as one of Samuel’s grandsons rather than John. Samuel was John Sr.’s father-in-law.
Also in 1850, in Fox Twp., Sullivan Co., Pennsylvania, there was Jonathan(64) & Rachel(59) HOGELAND, with children Uria, Matilda, Elisabeth, Julia, Rhoda and Harvey.
[3322] But their ages conflict with the dates given by HOAGLAND
[1868, p.62] and his list of their children is more consistent with the John & Rachel HOGELAND in Roaring Creek.
[3858], [3859]In 1860, Ashland, Schuylkill, Pennsylvania, the Rachel from Roaring Creek, has remarried to Michael PHILIPS(47), a carpenter from Wales, and the children in the household are the twins, Emiline[sic] and Angeline.
There was a John HOGLAND in Roaring Creek, Columbia Co., PA, in 1840. Family age tallies are not a precise match for Rachel’s family found there in the 1850 census, but it is close.
[3857] But it is definitely not the John HOOGLAND of the previous generation. Possible interpretation of the age tallies in this census record:
Males under 5: 1 = Jonas
Males 5-9: 1 = Samuel
Males 10-14: 2 = William & ?
Males 50-59: 1: = John (51-52)
Females under 5: 1 = Mary
Females 5-9: 1 = Elizabeth
Females 10-14: 1 = Matilda
Females 20-29: 1 = Rachel (actually 32)
