Research
There is a 1910 census entry in Hastings Ward 3, Adams Co., Nebraska, for a Mary CAMPBELL, age 74, born in Pennsylvania, but married to Johnathan CAMPBELL. They had one child, Annie, born ca. 1882 in Illinois, but another child had died earlier and Mary had only had 2 children total. The marriage notation implies this is the first marriage for both of them. So perhaps the Hoagland book (Source [1868]) is wrong. The 1900 census of Adams Co., shows what appears to be the same couple, but there her father’s birthplace is given as New Jersey instead of Pennsylvania. Also her birth is given as “Dec 1836.”

In 1880 in Monmouth, Warren, Illinois, there was a Mary & Wm. CAMPBELL. Mary age 45 born in Pennsylvania, parents born in Pennsylvania, no children. But if they were the couple in Wilson, Adair, Missouri, in 1880, his name was “J. H. CAMPBELL” and they had 2 children, Florence(16) & Maud N.(7).
