Research
Have not been able to find Mahlon D. in census records after 1850, though it appears he was in Michigan in 1863, when he registered for the draft. [4306] I’ve worked on a theory that he moved to Michigan and changed his name to Dennis Melvin TAYLOR, but so far I haven’t been able to prove the two are the same person. Dennis’ family tree is included in this genealogy but is unlinked to my known relatives.

17-JAN-2014: I found what could be a reference to Mahlon D. Taylor, in Ancestry's database "U.S., Civil War Draft Registrations Records, 1863-1865." This record is indexed under the spelling "Mahlen D Taylor" but since the last vowel in both names appears written the same it is either Mahlen D Tayler or Mahlon D Taylor; I suspect the scribe heard the 'o' as an 'e'. It shows his residence at the time as Farmington, Oakland Co., MI. His age was 28, and noted as married; and born in Pennsylvania. The date is June 1863. This would make his birth year 1835; the only other reference available, the 1850 census, implied 1832. So at this point you'd have to call it a close match, given the fuzziness of census records. Note that Farmington is where his brothers, William and Charles were living in 1850, and William was still there until at least 1890, while Charles moved on to Lansing. So far though I haven't been able to find any record of Mahlon D actually serving in the war.
