Misc. Notes
The first clue that any member of the TAYLOR family had migrated to Lansing, Michigan, came in a letter from John HAGER, in 1975. [1046] In it, he recounted how his mother (Lillian F. HAGER, nee ALLEN), told stories about having relatives in Lansing. [1046] However, in 1975, census research was not so easy, nor did I even know about the existence of Charles A. TAYLOR until decades later. Once I discovered that there were TAYLORs in Lansing who were born in Pennsylvania, the pieces of the puzzle came together. Two key documents solidified the argument. The death certificate of Charles, which named his parents as Mahlon and Elizabeth TAYLOR; [1791] and the fact that his nephew, Mahlon T. SLADE, was living with Charles in 1870. [1779]

The family moved to Michigan sometime between 1846 and 1850 (based on birth data of first two children). They first settled in Farmington, Michigan, along with Charles’ brother, William. In 1854, Charles bought 80 acres in Lansing, Michigan, so the move there was probably soon after, but William remained in Farmington (the deed for that land purchase described Charles as “of Farmington” showing that he had not yet moved). By the time Charles wrote his will in 1889, he had acquired another 80 acres immediately to the north of the first 80, but so far the deed for the 2nd 80 acres has not been found. [1794], [6041], [6042]

Mount Hope Cemetery: The TAYLOR family grave site can be reached from the road that runs on the west side of Section F. Looking east from the road, when you see the “PORTER” monument, the TAYLOR monument is up the hill from there.
Research
Based on a plat map published in 1895, it appears that he had a 160 acre farm located in Section 11, Township Range 4N, 2W, Lansing County, MI.

Alt.SpellingORTT [5480]
FatherJohn ORT (~1793-)
MotherMary SOPHIA (~1793-)
Misc. Notes
Possible alternate spelling of her maiden name: OST. [1792] The name is written by two different hands on the death certificate, one appearing to read “Ost” and the second looks like “Ort”. But going on the greater statistical occurrence of the name ORT, as well as finding families of that name in Lycoming Co., PA, census records (1860), I’m going with the spelling, ORT. m “ORT” spelling also supported by Source[ [5486]]

In the 1840 census of Mahlon TAYLOR [1033], the next entry on the page after Mahlon is Jacob ORT (though Ancestry.com says it could also be “ORB”). However, the Jacob ORT in Loyalsock in 1850 would seem to be 6-7 years older than Mr. ORB/ORT. In 1840, Loyalsock also had a David ORT, John ORT and Philip ORT.
Research
Thomas J. Ort (1835), son of Jacob Ort [NOT “Orth”] (1804) & Susanna/Susan - Loyalsock in 1840*-1850, Muncy in 1860, 1880. Also found Jacob “Oort” in Muncy 1862 tax list.
*aka “ORB” in 1840; also in 1840 no male in his age bracket listed.
